A candidate aiming to become a CCE lecturer who studies graduate-level quantum mechanics or tensor calculus is doing so at an inappropriate difficulty level. A candidate aiming to become a PGT lecturer who depends on elementary General Science notes will not be ready when attending to an 80-mark paper.

The series is based on this specific division, with the PGT/TRE Physics and the CCE Prelims Physics remaining as two entirely separate streams, both corresponding to the actual exam pattern and including the negative marking rules, so that you only practice the material actually needed for the exam.

The section in question has been prepared for those candidates who are aiming to obtain Higher Secondary Teacher (for Classes 11 and 12) positions with the Bihar Education Department.

Electrostatics covers Coulomb's law, the electric field, electric potential, Gauss's law and its applications, the Laplace and Poisson equations, boundary value problems, dielectrics, the polarization vector (P), the displacement vector (D), and the energy contained in electrostatic fields.

The subject of magnetostatics covers the Biot-Savart law, the method of calculating the magnetic field for a circular loop and for a solenoid, Ampere's circuital law, the magnetic vector potential (A), and the magnetic properties of materials (dia, para, ferromagnetism, hysteresis curve).

The subject matter covers Faraday's laws, Lenz's law, self-inductance and mutual inductance, alternating currents, series and parallel LCR circuits, resonance, and the power factor.

The displacement current, the electromagnetic field equations of Maxwell in both their differential and integral forms, the wave equation for the electric and magnetic fields in vacuum and in dielectric media, the Poynting vector, and radiation pressure.

3. Optics and Wave Motion (approximately 14 marks)

The topic covers Fermat's principle, the cardinal points of an optical system, spherical and chromatic aberrations in lenses, and the different methods for reducing these aberrations.

Light can be interfered with in a number of ways, such as by means of coherence, by dividing the wave front (as in the case of the Fresnel bi-prism), by dividing the amplitude (for example in thin films and in Newton's rings), and by using the Michelson interferometer.

Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction are included, together with diffraction through a single slit, that through two slits, and that using a grating, as well as the resolving power of optical instruments in accordance with the Rayleigh criterion as it applies to telescopes and gratings.

Linear, circular, and elliptical polarization, Brewster's law, double refraction, the Nicol prism, quarter-wave and half-wave plates, and optical activity (as determined by a polarimeter).

Lasers involve spontaneous and stimulated emission, Einstein's coefficients, population inversion, optical pumping, and the different parts of the Ruby laser and the He-Ne laser.

~12 marks: Thermal and Statistical Physics

The zeroth law of thermodynamics and the idea of temperature, the first law, the work carried out in isothermal and adiabatic processes, the second law, the Carnot cycle, the Carnot theorem, and the absolute thermodynamic temperature scale.

The subject includes entropy and thermodynamic potentials, such as the entropy changes in reversible and irreversible processes, the Clausius inequality, Maxwell's thermodynamic relations and their applications, the TdS equations, and the Joule-Thomson effect.

The Maxwell-Boltzmann velocity distribution, the equipartition of energy, the mean free path, and transport phenomena such as viscosity, thermal conductivity, and diffusion are all included in the kinetic theory of gases.

The main ideas in statistical mechanics include phase space, microstates and macrostates, statistical ensembles such as microcanonical, canonical, and grand canonical, the partition function, and a comparison of Maxwell-Boltzmann, Bose-Einstein, and Fermi-Dirac statistics.

5. Modern and Quantum Physics (about 13 marks)

The basic principles of quantum mechanics are blackbody radiation and Planck's quantum hypothesis, the photoelectric effect, the Compton effect, wave-particle duality, the de Broglie hypothesis, the Davisson-Germer experiment, and the Heisenberg uncertainty principle.

The time-dependent and time-independent Schrödinger wave equations, the physical interpretation of the wave function (ψ), normalization and probability density, the example of a particle in a one-dimensional box, and tunneling (barrier penetration).

The atomic models consist of Bohr's model of the hydrogen atom, the various spectral series (Lyman, Balmer, Paschen), the Ritz combination principle, the Sommerfeld model, the Frank-Hertz experiment, and the Stern-Gerlach experiment.

The subject matter of Nuclear Physics covers nuclear composition, the determination of the nuclear radius, the phenomenon of mass defect, the binding energy curve, the liquid drop model and the semi-empirical mass formula, the laws of radioactive decay (including half-life and mean-life), alpha, beta, and gamma decays, nuclear fission, and nuclear fusion.

6. Electronics and Solid State Physics (approximately 7 marks)

Crystal structures, Bravais lattices, Miller indices, X-ray diffraction, Bragg's law, the free electron theory of metals, the band theory of solids (for conductors, semiconductors, and insulators), and the effective mass of the electron.

The study of semiconductor electronics covers intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, p-n junction diodes, V-I characteristics, the application of the Zener diode as a voltage regulator, half-wave and full-wave rectifiers, and filtering circuits.

The subject matter covers bipolar junction transistors (BJT) used in common base (CB), common emitter (CE), and common collector (CC) arrangements, the application of a transistor as an amplifier, logic gates (AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, XOR), truth tables, and De Morgan's theorems.

In TRE 1.0 and TRE 2.0 the questions were primarily of a definitional type involving simple numerical substitutions; it was not until TRE 3.0 and TRE 4.0 that the commission introduced multi-step numerical problems in the areas of Rotational Dynamics, applications of Gauss's law, and thermodynamics cycles.

In order to obtain a score greater than 65 out of 80 in this paper, you should practise working through numerical problems on scratch paper rather than merely memorising formula sheets.

SECTION 2: BPSC CCE Prelims — General Science Physics (8–10 Questions)

This section is designed for candidates who are preparing for the Prelims of the Bihar Combined Competitive Examination (CCE).

The CCE Prelims exam has 30 marks in its General Science section, and the Physics part consists of about 8 to 10 questions. These questions examine an understanding of common physical phenomena and the basic scientific principles that are encountered in everyday life.

15 Common Mistakes Aspirants Make in BPSC Physics

Avoid these common preparation errors to protect your score:

  • A mistake that people make when preparing for the general science section of the CCE Prelims exam is to study advanced quantum wave equations or tensor mechanics.
  • Not carrying out numerical problems in the PGT: relying solely on theory and failing to carry out practical work on numerical problems in rotational dynamics and central forces.

  • Neglecting Sign Conventions in Optics: Forgetting coordinate signs when calculating focal lengths and image distances using the lens formula ($$\frac{1}{f} = \frac{1}{v} - \frac{1}{u}$$).

  • If you have eliminated two of the four choices, then leave the bubbles blank.
  • The features of fuse wire are confusing since it is neglected that the wire must have a high resistance and a low melting point.
