Railway NTPC Mock Test 2027: Free CBT 1 & CBT 2 Sets

Last Updated: 21 September 2026 | Verified for Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB) Examination Patterns
Notice regarding education and future-cycle safety: The series of tests has been revised in view of the most recent exam pattern for the RRB NTPC exam and in relation to the 2027 cycle. Although the pattern rules are still correct, the dates, the number of vacancies, and the cutoff scores will be updated each time they are officially announced. Once the Railway Recruitment Boards publish their Centralized Employment Notice (CEN) on the official regional RRB websites, the official notifications, the exact examination schedules, and the vacancies broken down by category for the 2027 recruitment cycle will be verified.

RRB NTPC 2027 Comprehensive Preparation Guide: CBT 1 & CBT 2 Master Strategy

The Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) exam, which is one of the largest competitive recruitment exercises in India, is organised by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs).

The examination is made up of two large parts which are administered on a computer. The first of these, CBT-1, contains 100 objective questions for a total of 100 marks and has to be completed within 90 minutes; it serves as a screening exercise in order to reduce the number of candidates who proceed to the next stage. CBT-2 has more questions, amounting to 120, with 120 marks available in the same 90-minute time frame, and this test is the one which is mainly used to establish the final ranking. A strict policy of one-third negative marking is in force in both sections (meaning that 0.33 marks are taken off for each wrong answer). The paper tests the candidates' knowledge in the areas of General Awareness, Mathematics, and General Intelligence for all undergraduate posts (Levels 2 and 3) and for the graduate posts (Levels 4, 5, and 6).

The platform for the Railway NTPC Mock Test 2027 provides dedicated sections for each of the two stages. You can use realistic 90-minute timers to practice, learn to maintain the 45-second speed needed for CBT-2, enhance your accuracy in the General Awareness section since this topic carries a lot of weight, and prepare for the requirements that follow the CBT such as the typing test and the Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT).

Examination Parameter CBT-1 Screening Specification CBT-2 Merit Specification Practical Significance
Conducting Body Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB) Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB) Central recruitment under the Ministry of Railways
Recruitment Levels Level 2, 3 (Undergraduate) & 4, 5, 6 (Graduate) Separate level-wise papers (Level 2, 3, 5, 6) Tests are calibrated to specific post qualifications
Total Questions 100 Objective MCQs 120 Objective MCQs 20 additional questions tested in the same time duration
Total Score The total score is 100 marks (+1.0 mark for each correct answer) and 120 marks (+1.0 mark for each correct answer) respectively, and the CBT-2 score determines the final merit ranking directly.
Examination Duration 90 Minutes (120 Minutes for eligible PwBD) 90 Minutes (120 Minutes for eligible PwBD) Time per question drops from 54 seconds to 45 seconds
Negative Marking A mark of one-third is subtracted (-0.33) for each wrong answer; one-third of a mark is deducted (-0.33) for each incorrect answer; three incorrect answers cancel out one correct answer.
General Awareness The General Awareness section includes 40 questions (40% of the total paper) and 50 questions (41.7% of the total paper) and is the most important factor in determining the scores in both stages.
Subsequent Stages Shortlisting for CBT-2 (roughly 15 to 20 times) CBAT, Typing Skill Test, DV & Medical Post-specific skill tests follow based on candidate choices

Railway NTPC Mock Test 2027 – Exam Pattern & Stage Comparison

Understanding how the test structure changes between stages is necessary for planning your study time:

Exam Metric CBT-1 (Screening Stage) CBT-2 (Merit Stage) Strategic Difference for Aspirants
General Awareness 40 Questions (40 Marks) 50 Questions (50 Marks) Requires deeper coverage of static science and railways
Mathematics 30 Questions (30 Marks) 35 Questions (35 Marks) Emphasizes quick calculation shortcuts and arithmetic
Reasoning Ability 30 Questions (30 Marks) 35 Questions (35 Marks) Features longer seating arrangements and puzzles
Total Questions 100 Questions 120 Questions You must answer 20% more questions in the same time
Total Time 90 Minutes (5,400 Seconds) 90 Minutes (5,400 Seconds) Pacing changes from 54 seconds to 45 seconds per question
Merit Status Qualifying / Screening only Directly counted for final appointment CBT-1 gets you shortlisted; CBT-2 wins the job
Question Medium 15 Regional Languages + English & Hindi 15 Regional Languages + English & Hindi Complete bilingual switch available during the test

The 45-second pacing trap which most candidates fail to notice – CBT 1 versus CBT 2

The greatest difficulty that candidates face when progressing from CBT-1 to CBT-2 is the reduction in the time given for each question.

In CBT-1 you are given 90 minutes to answer 100 questions, which amounts to approximately 54 seconds per question. In CBT-2 you also have 90 minutes but have to answer 120 questions, so your time per question is now only 45 seconds.

Plaintext

THE 9-SECOND TIME CRUNCH (CBT-1 VS CBT-2) Pacing Trap
CBT-1 Pace: 5,400 seconds divided by 100 questions equals 54.0 seconds for each question.
CBT-2 Pace: 5,400 seconds divided by 120 questions gives 45.0 seconds for each question.
You lose 9 seconds with each question. If you fall behind by 5 questions, your schedule is off track.

The fact that candidates are given nine seconds less per question presents a serious problem since those who have worked on CBT-1 papers often run out of time when taking CBT-2 and therefore fail to answer between 15 and 20 questions in Mathematics or Reasoning.

Recommended Pacing Strategy per Section

As the RRB exams do not include sectional time limits, you can divide your 90 minutes among the different subjects as you wish. The table that is given below shows our recommended timetable:

Examination Section CBT-1 Time Plan (100 Questions) CBT-2 Time Plan (120 Questions) Tactical Execution Rule
General Awareness The General Awareness section has 40 questions to be done in 22 minutes as well as another 50 questions within the same time frame. You must recall the answers directly and if you have not remembered the answer within 15 seconds you should go on to the next question.
Mathematics Mathematics – 33 minutes for 30 questions and 30 minutes for 35 questions – do the speed math and arithmetic first and put the more complex geometry until later.
General Intelligence For a General Intelligence test, 27 minutes are allowed for 30 questions and 28 minutes for 35 questions; you should first attempt the series and coding questions and then do the puzzles on your second pass through.
Final Review At the final review stage, 8 minutes (for verification) and 10 minutes (for a doubtful review) should be allowed; the questions should be checked and it is important not to guess blindly since there are one-third penalties.

TIME-PER-QUESTION PACING COMPARISON (SECONDS) Pacing Bars
CBT-1 Average Time 54 Seconds
CBT-2 Average Time 45 Seconds
GA Reading Target 18 to 22 Seconds
Math Calculation 60 Seconds
Reasoning Puzzle 55 Seconds

How to Dominate the 40/50 Mark General Awareness Section

General Awareness is the most important section in both CBT-1 and CBT-2; it makes up 40% of the marks in CBT-1 and approximately 41.7% in CBT-2.

The General Awareness questions can be answered quickly, while Mathematics and Reasoning involve the need to carry out written calculations. It takes approximately 15 to 20 seconds to answer a General Awareness question, which enables you to save some of the valuable minutes you'll need for the calculations you have to do later in the test.

A introduction to the subject of computers and information technology.

Computer questions often come up at both stages. Focus on:

  • Data representation includes the use of binary, octal, decimal, and hexadecimal number systems; the character values as defined by ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange); and the conversions between bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and petabytes.
  • The roles of system software and those of application software; the differences between open-source and proprietary operating systems (for example Linux, Unix, Windows, and Android); and the BIOS together with the boot process.
  • The OSI model, together with IPv4 and IPv6 regarding IP addressing, TCP/IP, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, DNS, routing concepts, and local area networks (LAN and WAN).
  • This involves the standard keyboard shortcuts used in word processors and spreadsheets as well as the common file extensions.

2. The evolution and development of Indian Railways

Questions on the Indian railway network test institutional and historical knowledge:

  • The historical background involves the first passenger train service running on 16 April 1853 from Bori Bunder (Bombay) to Thane; the nationalization of the railways in 1951; and several historical railway committees (such as the Acworth Committee).
  • It is worth mentioning that the Railway Budget was included in the Union Budget in 2017 when the Bibek Debroy Committee issued its recommendations, and the current questions pertain to the railway budgetary allocations in the light of the total Union Budget.
  • There are 18 railway zones that are currently operating, including their head offices, for example the Northern Railway in New Delhi, the South Central Railway in Secunderabad, the East Coast Railway in Bhubaneswar, and the North Western Railway in Jaipur; the production units are also mentioned (CLW Chittaranjan, DLW Varanasi, ICF Perambur, RCF Kapurthala).
  • The modern initiatives involve the Western and Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridors, the Vande Bharat Express routes, the Kavach automatic train protection technology, and solar-powered railway stations.

3. General science and the various international environmental treaties

Science questions are drawn directly from Class 9 and Class 10 NCERT concepts:

  • In physics and chemistry the subjects cover the SI units, Newton's laws of motion, the formulas relating work, power, and energy, lenses and mirrors, the various types of chemical reactions, acids, bases, and the trends displayed in the periodic table.
  • The topics covered in the biological and life science areas are the human circulatory, nervous, and endocrine systems; the nutritional vitamins and the disorders that arise from a deficiency of vitamins; plant photosynthesis and plant hormones; and infectious bacterial and viral diseases.
  • The environmental agreements in question are the Ramsar Convention on wetlands (1971), the Montreal Protocol on ozone-depleting substances (1987), the Kyoto Protocol on reductions in greenhouse gases (1997), and the Paris Climate Agreement (2015).

Why Most RRB NTPC Mock Tests Fail Candidates

Many commercial railway test portals use generic materials that do not match the real exam:

  • Combining CBT-1 and CBT-2 causes many platforms to use the same 100-question format for all their tests, and as a result it does not prepare students for the 120-question, 45-second timing that is required in CBT-2.
  • Many coaching websites have only a rather superficial general awareness, since they rely on brief and out-of-date one-liners and therefore cannot deal with the kind of more profound questions that arise in the areas of computer architecture, science, and railway administration.
  • The difficulty is identical for Level 2 clerical posts and Level 6 Station Master posts since the same questions are given in each case, even though tests at graduate level demand a greater degree of analytical ability.
  • No preparation is given for the later stages since several of the platforms stop at CBT-2 and hence do not provide any preparation materials for either the Station Master CBAT or the clerical typing tests.
  • Several websites have put paywalls on their printable materials, so that the question papers and answer explanations are blocked by these paywalls on their mobile app.

Next Stage Demystified: CBAT for Station Master & Typing for Clerks

Securing a final appointment requires clearing the post-specific skill tests that follow CBT-2:

The Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) for the posts of Station Master and Traffic Assistant

Candidates who have cleared the CBT-2 for posts at Level 6 Station Master (since the number of people shortlisted is about eight times the number of vacancies) must take the CBAT.

  • The test has five separate parts: the Intelligence Test, the Selective Attention Test, the Spatial Scanning Test, the Information Ordering Test, and the Personality Assessment.
  • In order to be considered, candidates must obtain a minimum T-Score of 42 in each of the five test batteries; a high score in four of the batteries won't compensate for scoring below 42 in the fifth.
  • The final merit score for applicants who are applying for the post of Station Master is determined by a combined formula which includes 70 per cent of your CBT-2 score and 30 per cent of your CBAT score.

Test on typing skills for clerical positions

Candidates applying for Level 2 and Level 5 typist posts must clear a qualifying typing test:

  • When using an English keyboard the required speed is 30 words per minute and when using a Hindi keyboard it is 25 words per minute.
  • The duration of the test is 10 minutes and, in keeping with the standard assessment rules, the editing facilities, spell-check, and the backspace function are usually either limited or penalised.
  • The test is of a qualifying nature because the marks you get in it are not part of your total written score, but if you fail it you will be excluded from consideration for clerical positions.

Percentile Normalization: How Multi-Shift Scores Are Calculated

The difficulty level of the papers for the RRB NTPC exams is slightly different because the exams take place on various dates and in several shifts.

To ensure fairness, the Railway Recruitment Boards apply an official mathematical normalization formula:

  • The score which you get is altered in line with the results of the candidates from all the shifts.
  • The calculation considers both the average scores and the standard deviation of the top scorers in your shift in comparison with those of the other shifts.
  • It is worth noting that the percentile rank shown on our practice platform is designed so that you can be compared with other students who are currently using our website. However, the official RRB normalization is calculated only by the commission based on verified data from all the actual exam shifts.

Previous Year Trend Analysis (Mock Design Distribution)

90-Minute Speed Strategy: Clearing the Merit Barrier

Scoring well in CBT-1 and CBT-2 requires a disciplined order of attempts:

Exam Phase & Subject Time Block Target Questions Recommended Pacing Strategy Target Net Marks
Phase 1: General Awareness From minute 00 to 22 40 to 45 Answer direct factual and computer questions quickly and skip those you are uncertain about. 32 to 36 marks
Phase 2: Mathematics do questions 22 to 52, specifically numbers 25 to 28, by solving number series, percentages, and simple arithmetic, and put off the more lengthy geometry until later. 22 to 25 marks.
Phase 3: Reasoning from minute 52 to 80, there are 25 to 28 questions on syllogisms, coding and blood relations, and during your second go through you should work on the puzzles, with 23 to 26 marks expected.
Phase 4: Final Review look at the minutes from 80 to 90 and answer 10 to 15 questions. Go back to the questions where you have eliminated two options and check your OMR answers. This should yield 6 to 8 marks.
Overall CBT-2 Target 90 minutes for Objective CBT-2 95 to 105 attempts The aim is to get 85 or more answers correct in order to remain competitive for Level 5 and 6 merit and a net mark between 80 and 88.

Section-wise Weightage, Preparation Strategy & Recommended Books

Follow these subject guidelines to build balanced speed and accuracy:

1. General Awareness (Weight: 40 Marks CBT-1, 50 Marks CBT-2)

As for your study plan, you should study the Science textbooks for Classes 9 and 10 in full. Make sure to go over the relevant computer terminology, hardware architecture, and keyboard shortcuts. Also, keep a record of any developments concerning the railways, the locations of the railway zones, and the environmental treaties.

The following books are recommended: Lucent's General Knowledge, the NCERT Science Textbooks from Classes 6 through 10, and the Manorama Yearbook (for information on annual summits and awards).

2. Mathematics (weighting: 30 marks in CBT-1 / 35 marks in CBT-2)

As part of your study plan, you should practice doing mental arithmetic by memorizing multiplication tables up to 30, square roots up to 50, and cube roots up to 30, and also concentrate on the conversions of percentages to fractions as well as on basic algebra formulas.

The following books are recommended: Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive Examinations by R.S. Aggarwal and Fast Track Objective Arithmetic by Rajesh Verma.

3. General Intelligence and Reasoning (Weighting: 30 Marks in CBT-1 / 35 Marks in CBT-2)

For studying, practise condition notation so that you can quickly draw in the puzzle constraints. Each day work through two seating arrangements, one linear and one circular. Make sure that you review the rules on syllogisms, with a special focus on those involving 'only a few'.

The following books are recommended: 'A Modern Approach to Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning' by R.S. Aggarwal and 'Analytical Reasoning' by M.K. Pandey.

15 Common Mistakes Aspirants Make in RRB NTPC Prep

Avoid these frequent preparation errors to protect your score on exam day:

  • Solving CBT-2 at CBT-1 speed: failing to remember that CBT-2 involves answering 120 questions within 90 minutes, which results in some questions in Mathematics and Reasoning not being completed.
  • Spendings too much time on difficult math questions: spending three minutes on one geometry problem in the first thirty minutes, which leaves insufficient time for the easier questions later on.
  • Making random guesses in the presence of negative marking will result in a deduction of 0.33 marks, thereby lowering your total score below the cutoff line.
  • Looking at General Awareness in a simplistic way: failing to address more fundamental questions regarding computer basics, scientific principles, and railway history.
  • The station master is ignoring the need to carry out aptitude test preparation until after the CBT-2 results have been obtained, which leaves insufficient time for mastering the five test batteries.
  • Failing to practice keyboard typing until after the written results have been obtained and not achieving the necessary typing speed of 30 words per minute.
  • Applying the same study plan to all pay levels: not recognizing that the Level 5 and Level 6 papers include more complicated reasoning puzzles and multi-step math problems.
  • Considering the CBT-1 marks as part of the final merit: believing that scoring very highly in CBT-1 ensures a job, while failing to remember that CBT-2 determines the final selection.
  • Not practicing the elimination of options: guessing without eliminating the impossible answers in order to increase your chances on questions that you are unsure about.
  • Recalling math shortcuts without understanding the concepts leads to errors when the questions are only slightly different.
  • Carrying out scratch work in a disorganized manner by writing calculations carelessly on rough paper often results in sign errors and numbers being misread during timed tests.
  • The details regarding the history of the Indian Railways are confusing in that railway zones, their headquarters, and historical events such as the 2017 budget merger are mixed up.
  • Working on practice questions at home without keeping an eye on whether you're maintaining an average speed of 45 to 54 seconds per question.
  • Focusing too much on modern history at the cost of science: spending weeks on historical timelines while neglecting the questions in Class 9 and 10 biology and physics.
  • Taking tests without using a notebook to record and then review the questions that are missed.

Why Attempt This Free RRB NTPC Test Series

Taking realistic practice tests is the most effective way to prepare for the pressure of exam day:

  • Try out both types of test: use dedicated sets consisting of 100 questions for CBT-1 and sets containing 120 questions for CBT-2.
  • When selecting questions it is important to learn which ones you should solve right away and which complex puzzles you should leave for later.
  • Accurately identify weak areas by using diagnostic heatmaps to find the chapters in which you keep on losing marks, so that you can concentrate your study time on the areas that really matter.
  • For later stages, you can get access to the practice tools and benchmarks for the Station Master CBAT and the clerical typing tests.

Why This Mock Test Series Was Put Together

My name is Shubham Kumar Sah and I am the founder of SarkariMockTest.com. Almost all of the RRB NTPC materials that I have looked at either combine CBT-1 and CBT-2 into a single general paper or cease to be of any use as soon as the CBT section ends.

The three things that are most often overlooked are this: firstly, CBT-2 includes 120 questions within the same 90 minutes, meaning that if you practice at CBT-1 speed you will find it inadequate on the actual exam day; secondly, General Awareness is regarded as a list of one-liners even though it accounts for the largest proportion of the marks; and thirdly, there is no guidance provided for Station Master and typist candidates regarding what happens after the CBT.

The series is based on all three of these elements. The CBT-1 and CBT-2 mock tests are kept apart. The GA drills concentrate on computers, Indian Railways and science. The CBAT and typing labs get you ready for the following stage. Each explanation illustrates the method, not merely the answer key.

Most of the series remains available for free in the form of downloadable PDFs since a properly designed diagnostic shouldn't be behind a paywall that only applies to an app.

Whenever I am preparing this series, I make sure that each test answers the question of whether or not it reveals how a candidate's speed or accuracy fails under exam pressure; if it doesn't, then the test is not included.

Final Practical Advice: The Mathematics of Negative Marking

In both CBT-1 and CBT-2, each wrong answer deducts one-third of a mark (-0.33).

Understanding the mathematics behind this rule can help you make better decisions on uncertain questions:

Four Choices Unknown: If you guess blindly among all four options, your probability of picking the correct answer is 25% (+1.0 mark), while your probability of picking a wrong answer is 75% (-0.33 marks). The mathematical expected value is zero:

Expected Value = (0.25 × 1.0) − (0.75 × 0.33) = 0.25 − 0.25 = 0.00

Random guessing among all four options offers no statistical benefit and risks dragging down your score.

One Option Eliminated: If you can eliminate even one option with complete certainty, your odds improve to one in three (33.3% chance of +1.0 mark, 66.7% chance of -0.33 marks). The expected value becomes positive (+0.11 marks).

Two Options Eliminated: If you can eliminate two options, leaving a 50/50 choice, your expected value rises to +0.33 marks per question.

The practical takeaway is straightforward: never make blind guesses across four unknown options. Only attempt uncertain questions if you can eliminate at least one choice with complete confidence.

Maintain a dedicated revision notebook. After every practice test, record every missed question, identify the underlying calculation or conceptual error, and review your notes before starting your next test. Consistent review and disciplined pacing are what secure a place on the final merit list.
