SBI PO Mock Test 2027: Free Prelims & Mains Series

Last updated: 21 September 2026 | Confirmed for the State Bank of India (SBI) Examination Patterns
Notice concerning education and safety in the future cycle: This series of tests has been brought up to date to match the latest exam pattern for the SBI PO and the details relating to the 2027 cycle. The pattern rules are still correct; updates about the exam dates, the number of vacancies, and the cutoff scores will be made available as soon as they are officially announced. The historical cutoff figures from previous cycles are given only for reference as performance standards. When the State Bank of India's Central Recruitment & Promotion Department (CRPD) issues its notification on sbi.co.in/web/careers, the official recruitment notices, the exam dates, the application periods, and the number of vacancies by category for the 2027 recruitment cycle will be checked.

SBI PO 2027 Examination Blueprint: Comprehensive Prelims & Mains Testing Guide

The Probationary Officer examination organised by the State Bank of India is usually considered to be the foremost method of recruitment in the Indian public banking sector.

The Phase-I (Preliminary Examination) consists of 100 objective questions amounting to a total of 100 marks and must be completed within a strict 60-minute time limit. Candidates are awarded +1 mark for each correct answer whereas 0.25 marks are deducted for each incorrect answer. The paper is made up of three separate sections: English Language (30 questions), Quantitative Aptitude (35 questions), and Reasoning Ability (35 questions). Each of the sections has a mandatory, fixed timer of 20 minutes. Unlike many other banking exams, the SBI PO exam does not have any sectional cut-off; eligibility for the Phase-II Mains is entirely based on the candidate's total aggregate score out of 100 marks.

The SBI PO Mock Test 2027 platform provides authentic full-length practice tests which closely replicate the CRPD interface. You will be able to practice your speed using 20-minute section timers that remain fixed, tailor your preparation using the zero-sectional-cutoff method, work on puzzles involving variables and data interpretation caselets, and prepare for the 50-mark typing-based Descriptive Test.

Examination Feature Official SBI PO Specification Practical Value for Candidates
Conducting Body State Bank of India (CRPD, Mumbai) Leading public commercial banking institution in India
Job advertisement Probationary Officer (Junior Management Grade Scale-I) Basic salary of Rs. 41,960 together with four advance increments and allowances
Phase-I Total Questions 100 Objective Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) A well-balanced speed test covering English, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning
Phase I total mark: 100 marks (with an additional 1.0 mark for each correct answer) it is a competitive scoring environment in which every decimal mark counts
Exam Duration 60 Minutes (3 Sections × 20 Minutes Locked Timers) Requires sharp question selection under intense time pressure
Negative Marking For each incorrect answer, 0.25 marks are deducted (this is a one-fourth penalty) since it discourages random guessing and encourages accurate and disciplined responses.
Sectional Passing Cutoff NO SECTIONAL CUTOFF (Zero minimum passing mark per section) Enables you to improve your overall mark by focusing on your stronger subjects
Selection Criteria Overall aggregate score out of 100 marks Approximately ten times the number of vacancies result in qualification for the Mains examination

SBI PO selection process and final merit formula infographic

Why This Mock Test Series Was Put Together

I'm Shubham Kumar Sah, founder of SarkariMockTest.com. Almost every SBI PO resource I've reviewed either treats the exam like any other bank test or leaves out the parts that decide selection.

Two things get missed most. First, many candidates still believe they need passing marks in every section, when SBI PO has a 20-minute sectional timer but no sectional cutoff. Second, the 50-mark Descriptive Test is almost never practiced, even though it sits right after three hours of objective questions.

This series is built around both. Prelims mocks use real sectional timers and authentic puzzle and DI difficulty. Mains mocks include the typing-based Descriptive Test. Every explanation shows the method, not just the answer key.

A large part of the series stays free, with downloadable PDFs, because a well-built diagnostic shouldn't sit behind an app-only paywall.

As I keep building this series, I check every test against one question: does it show where a candidate's speed or accuracy breaks down under exam pressure? If it doesn't, it doesn't get included.

The SBI PO Strategic Advantage: Explanation of the Absence of a Sectional Cut-off

The absence of minimum qualifying scores for the various sections is the most important strategic aspect of the SBI PO exam.

In most banking exams you are asked to spread your study effort equally if you are to pass each subject, whereas the SBI PO exam promotes a completely different method in that by focusing on your stronger subjects you can take your total combined score above the general cutoff.

Aggregate Score versus Sectional Passing: Focusing on Strong Subjects

In any exam which has sectional cut-offs, failing one subject by only half a mark is sufficient to disqualify you, even though your overall score is high.

The SBI PO exam is based on aggregate merit:

  • You have to carry out each of the 20-minute sections until the timer runs out.
  • There is no obligation on your part to obtain a minimum number of marks in English, Quantitative Aptitude, or Reasoning Ability.
  • The only factor affecting your eligibility for the Mains examination is the total score you obtain out of 100 marks.

For example, suppose there is a candidate who has trouble with English grammar but who does well in mathematical reasoning. If he or she obtains 11 marks in English, 31 marks in Quantitative Aptitude and 29 marks in Reasoning Ability, the total aggregate score will be 71 marks. Even though the English section has a high sectional cut-off, the candidate could still be rejected. Yet in the case of the SBI PO exam, a total score of 71 is enough to clear the general category cut-off and gain a place in the Mains examination.

The 4-Attempt Rule: Why Taking the Preliminary Exam Does NOT Use Up One of Your Attempts

Because they are afraid of using one of their limited number of official attempts, many candidates choose not to take the preliminary examination.

The official SBI PO notification specifies the attempt rules as follows:

  • Candidates in the general category and those in the EWS category are permitted a maximum of four attempts.
  • OBC candidates have a maximum limit of 7 attempts.
  • There is no restriction on the number of attempts for candidates in the SC and ST categories.

Only count an attempt if you take the Phase-II Mains Examination; taking the Phase-I Preliminary Examination does not constitute an official attempt. If you take the preliminary exam but do not qualify for the Mains, your attempt count will not change. You are therefore at liberty to take the preliminary exam in order to evaluate your abilities without putting your eligibility at risk.

Negative marking (–0.25 marks) and accuracy management

For each wrong answer one-quarter of a mark (0.25 marks) is deducted.

If you give one incorrect answer you will have 1.25 marks deducted in total, that is to say the 1.0 mark that you did not earn plus a 0.25 mark penalty taken from the marks you obtained for the correct answers.

THE ACCURACY MATHEMATICS IN A 20-MINUTE SECTION Accuracy Logic
Strategy A (Aggressive): 28 attempts, 20 correct (+20.0), 8 incorrect (-2.00), giving a net score of 18.00 marks.
Strategy B (Disciplined): 22 attempts | 21 correct (+21.0) | 1 wrong (-0.25) = 20.75 net marks
The fundamental principle is that it is better to solve problems slowly and accurately than to rush about and guess.

SBI PO versus IBPS PO: An explanation of the sectional timer, sectional cutoffs and attempt rules

A frequent mistake committed by people preparing for bank exams is to regard the SBI PO and IBPS PO exams as being identical. Even though both posts are for Probationary Officers, there are considerable differences in the rules relating to the exams:

Examination Rules State Bank of India PO (SBI PO) Institute of Banking Personnel Selection PO (IBPS PO) Impact on examination strategy
Sectional timers 20 minutes locked per section in the prelims 20 minutes locked per section in the prelims The time allocation per section is the same in both exams
Sectional cutoffs There are no sectional cutoffs in either the prelims or the mains Strict sectional cutoffs apply in both stages SBI encourages specialisation in a subject whereas IBPS requires a balanced performance
Attempt counting Attempts are only counted if the candidate appears for the mains There is no limit on the number of attempts (provided age limits are met) It is possible to take the SBI Prelims without using one of your official attempts
Descriptive scoring 50 marks (Letter and Essay, 30 minutes) 25 marks (Letter and Essay, 30 minutes) Descriptive writing carries twice the weight in SBI PO
Mains weightage 250 total marks (200 objective + 50 descriptive) 225 total marks (200 objective + 25 descriptive) Data interpretation at a high level is the main focus in the SBI Mains stage
Structure of Phase-III Group exercise (20 marks) + Interview (30 marks) Personal interview only (100 marks) SBI assesses group dynamics and psychometric traits
Final normalisation 75:25 ratio (the mains score is scaled to 75, Phase-III to 25) 80:20 ratio (the mains score is scaled to 80, the interview to 20) Phase-III has a higher proportional value in SBI PO

Exam pattern for SBI PO Prelims and the 20-minute sectional plan

The preliminary examination consists of three consecutive sections with an automated timer:

Section order Section name Number of questions Maximum marks Sectional duration Sectional cutoff Marking rule
Section 1 English Language 30 questions 30 marks 20 minutes (locked) None +1.0 / -0.25
Section 2 Quantitative Aptitude 35 questions 35 marks 20 minutes (locked) None +1.0 / -0.25
Section 3 Reasoning Ability 35 questions 35 marks 20 minutes (locked) None +1.0 / -0.25
Total test Phase-I Preliminary Exam 100 questions 100 marks 60 minutes (1 hour) None (only aggregate) +1.0 / -0.25

Quantitative Aptitude: High-weightage Data Interpretation and Arithmetic (35 questions | 20 minutes)

Quantitative Aptitude tests numerical speed and the ability to select appropriate questions:

  • The speed math foundation section (comprising 10 to 15 questions) includes problems involving number series with a missing or incorrect term, quadratic inequalities (comparing x and y), and questions on approximation. This type of section can be done in between 5 and 6 minutes and awards basic marks.
  • Data Interpretation (10 to 15 questions): This includes two or three sets drawn from bar charts, tabular arrangements, double pie charts, or paragraph-based caselets, with the emphasis being on ratio comparisons and percentage differences rather than on lengthy manual divisions.
  • For arithmetic word problems (8 to 10 questions) there are standalone questions on profit and loss, partnership, simple and compound interest, time and work, and mixtures. Select the questions that fall within your strongest areas.

Reasoning Ability: Floor, flat and circular puzzles (35 questions | 20 minutes)

Reasoning Ability assesses your ability to organise complex information:

  • The puzzles and the seating arrangements (20 to 22 questions) typically consist of four complete sets – these are the floor and flat arrangements, the circular arrangements based on various factors (for example, eight people facing in or out with their colour preferences), the parallel row arrangements, and the box stacking.
  • For the miscellaneous logic section (comprising questions 13 to 15) there are syllogisms (with an emphasis on statements involving 'only a few'), direct and coded inequalities, direction sense tests, family trees involving blood relations, and alphanumeric sequences—tackle these first in order to gain easy marks before proceeding to the more lengthy puzzles.

English Language: Contextual reading comprehension and cloze test (30 questions | 20 minutes)

The English section tests practical reading ability rather than memorised rules:

  • Reading comprehension (8 to 10 questions): There is a passage of 800 words covering financial developments, climate policy or technology trends, and the questions include those which test inference, the identification of the main theme, and the use of vocabulary in context.
  • Grammar and sentence flow (10 to 12 questions): Find errors in sentences with several parts. Improve sentences. Replace phrases. Rearrange sentences.
  • There are eight to ten questions on vocabulary and fillers: paragraphs used in a cloze test, sentences with two blanks, and exercises concerning the use of words that have more than one meaning.

Structure of SBI PO Mains and descriptive testing (250-mark overview)

Candidates who clear the aggregate cutoff in the prelims move on to Phase-II, the mains, which combines objective testing with an on-screen descriptive exam:

PHASE-II MAINS EXAMINATION SCHEME (250 TOTAL MARKS) Mains Pattern
PART A: OBJECTIVE CBT (200 MARKS | 3 HOURS | 155 QUESTIONS)
• Reasoning & Computer Aptitude : 40 Questions (50 Marks) | 50 Minutes Locked Clock
• Data Analysis & Interpretation : 30 Questions (50 Marks) | 45 Minutes Locked Clock
• General / Economy / Banking Awareness: 50 Questions (60 Marks) | 45 Minutes Locked Clock
• English Language : 35 Questions (40 Marks) | 40 Minutes Locked Clock
PART B: DESCRIPTIVE TEST (50 MARKS | 30 MINUTES TYPING ON KEYBOARD)
• Formal / Informal Letter Writing : 1 Question (20 Marks) | Word limit: ~150 words
• Contemporary Essay Writing : 1 Question (30 Marks) | Word limit: ~250 words

The Objective Test for Phase II comprises Data Analysis, Reasoning and Banking Awareness (200 marks). The Data Analysis and Interpretation section (30 questions, 50 marks) involves advanced caselet-type data interpretation, the interpretation of missing tables, radar charts, and probability-based data models; rather than concentrating on pure calculation, it stresses logical problem solving. The Reasoning and Computer Aptitude section (40 questions, 50 marks) contains complex puzzles with three or four variables, coded inequalities, step-by-step machine input-output arrangements, and critical reasoning which involves making assumptions as well as strengthening and weakening arguments. The section on General, Economy and Banking Awareness (50 questions, 60 marks) tests knowledge of financial news from the past six months, for example, circulars issued by the Reserve Bank of India, monetary policy rates, national fiscal budgets, and international financial summits. The English Language section (35 questions, 40 marks) has advanced editorial comprehension, paragraph inference and complex sentence rearrangement.

Phase-II Descriptive Test: Formal Letter & Essay Typing (50 Marks)

The descriptive test begins on the same computer screen immediately after the objective test.

You are given 30 minutes to type two tasks using a standard physical keyboard:

  • Writing letters (20 marks): This involves sending formal letters to banking managers, municipal commissioners, or newspaper editors, or composing informal letters to family members about the topic of financial literacy.
  • The question carries 30 marks and asks candidates to write essays of 250 words on topics such as digital public infrastructure, green banking, the application of artificial intelligence in financial services, or rural financial inclusion.

The descriptive test answers are evaluated only by candidates who achieve the objective aggregate cutoff, and the 50 marks obtained in this case are added directly to your objective score when your total score is calculated in Phase-II, this phase out of 250 marks.

Phase-III Selection: Group Discussion, Psychometric Assessment & Personal Interview

Candidates who qualify on the basis of their Phase-II total score (out of 250 marks) advance to Phase-III:

  • A psychometric test is a personality test which is administered before the interviews and the results are then provided to the interview panel so that they can refer to them when asking the candidate questions about their personality.
  • The group exercise (20 marks) consists of group discussions and collaborative prioritization exercises which are intended for the purpose of evaluating abilities in leadership, teamwork and communication.
  • Personal Interview (30 Marks): An in-depth discussion covering your academic background, your knowledge of banking, your opinions on socioeconomic issues, and your personal suitability for a career in managerial banking.

SBI PO Descriptive Test & High-Level DI Focus (The Hidden 50 Marks)

Many of the candidates are not able to secure their final appointment because they only focus on the objective multiple-choice questions and fail to take the descriptive exam.

Twenty percent of your total Phase-II score comes from the 50 marks obtained in the descriptive test.

THE DESCRIPTIVE TEST EVALUATION RUBRIC Scoring Rubric
1. Structural Format (20%) : It has the right addresses, salutations, subject lines, and sign-offs.
2. Content Relevance (40%) : This involves providing a direct treatment of the subject by means of facts, balanced reasoning, and data.
3. Grammar and flow (20 per cent): Clear sentence structure, the correct use of verb tenses, and smooth transitions.
4. Vocabulary and Limit (20%): Staying within 10% more or 10% less of the word limit without committing any spelling errors.

Managing the 30-Minute Descriptive Writing Clock

To complete both tasks comfortably within 30 minutes, organize your time into three phases:

  • From the very first minute up to the third minute, read the prompts, choose both your letter and essay topics, and plan out the main points on your rough scratch paper.
  • From 03 to 13 (that is, a duration of 10 minutes), write out your letter (approximately 150 words) and strictly follow the standard formal format.
  • Between minute 13 and 27 (that is, a span of 14 minutes), you should write your essay (approximately 250 words) and structure it using an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a well-balanced conclusion.
  • From 27 to 30 minutes (3 minutes): go through both of the responses and correct any typing errors, punctuation slips, and spelling mistakes.

Tackling Advanced Data Analysis in Mains

In SBI PO Mains, Data Analysis and Interpretation questions focus on multi-layered logic rather than basic arithmetic:

  • Caselet DI: The paragraphs in question are complex narratives and require the drawing of Venn diagrams or the formation of algebraic equations as an initial step in order to solve them.
  • Tables which have missing percentages or ratios should be completed by means of footnotes and the information given in the rows.
  • Arithmetic DI: Data sets which are based directly on arithmetic concepts such as time-and-work schedules or mixture ratios.

Why Most SBI PO Mock Tests Fail Candidates

Many commercial banking test series do not accurately match the real SBI PO examination:

  • The questions included in commercial test kits are generally simple one-liners and involve basic percentage problems — a kind of material you'd normally encounter in a clerical examination — and therefore do not prepare candidates for the more difficult PO-level questions.
  • Some platforms pose questions that require lengthy and complicated calculations which it is impossible to work out within the 20-minute time limit, thus promoting poor time-management habits.
  • Advice on sectional cutoffs can be misleading because some blogs continue to state that candidates have to pass each section, which leads students to spend their time working on their weaker areas rather than trying to maximize their total score.
  • Many portals overlook the descriptive stage because they only include objective questions and do not give the possibility of practicing keyboard typing or provide scoring criteria.
  • The normalization ratios are disregarded because many platforms provide only the raw scores without explaining how the Mains and interview scores are scaled in line with the final 75:25 merit formula.

To create a well-balanced approach that ensures both speed and accuracy, follow the subject-wise guidelines outlined below:

1. The English Language (30 marks in the Preliminary examination / 40 marks in the Mains examination)

As a strategy, you should read reputable financial newspapers each day in order to increase your reading speed and get used to business vocabulary. You must also make certain to review the fundamental grammar rules, for example those concerning subject-verb agreement, modifiers, parallel structure, and conditional clauses.

The books that are recommended are Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis; Objective General English by S.P. Bakshi; and High School English Grammar and Composition by Wren & Martin.

2. Quantitative Aptitude and Data Analysis (35 marks in the Preliminary examination / 50 marks in the Mains examination)

Approach: Memorise the multiplication tables up to 30, the squares up to 50, the cubes up to 30, and the method for converting fractions to percentages as a way of improving mental maths. Every day, work through two data interpretation (DI) sets, paying particular attention to problems involving missing data tables and caselet problems.

The books that are recommended are Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive Examinations by R.S. Aggarwal, Quantum CAT by Sarvesh K. Verma, and Data Interpretation & Data Sufficiency by Arun Sharma.

3. Reasoning ability and critical thinking (weighting: 35 marks in the preliminary exam / 50 marks in the mains exam)

Approach: Take the time to become skilled at using condition notation in order that you can clearly extract the constraints of the puzzles without needing to go back and re-read the paragraphs. Every day you should solve three different kinds of puzzles—those that deal with floors and flats, scheduling puzzles, and puzzles involving variable circular arrangements. When preparing for the Mains exam, you should also work on critical reasoning by concentrating on arguments, assumptions, and inferences.

The books that are recommended are A Modern Approach to Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning by R.S. Aggarwal; Analytical Reasoning by M.K. Pandey; and Puzzle Mania by Oliveboard.

15 Common Mistakes Made by Aspirants in SBI PO Preparation

Avoid these frequently committed errors to protect your score:

  • Don't confuse sectional timers with sectional cutoffs; rather than focusing on passing each section, try to maximise your total aggregate score.
  • If you put off doing the practice until after the Preliminary exam results have been announced, you'll not have enough time to develop your keyboard speed.
  • When you spend seven minutes on a difficult puzzle in the first part of the Reasoning section, it causes you to fail to answer some simpler questions.
  • Making hasty guesses in the presence of negative marking means that if you guess without thinking you will have 0.25 marks deducted each time, which can cause your total score to fall below the cutoff.
  • By completely avoiding arithmetic you miss out on simple word problems which take less time than complex data interpretation sets.
  • Carrying out practice with tests at a clerical level: attempting only simple one-liner questions will not get you ready for the multi-variable puzzles found in the real exam.
  • Failing to study banking and economic awareness: waiting until after the Preliminary exam to begin studying general awareness results in having a great deal of revision to carry out before the Mains.
  • Not analysing tests that have been completed: taking practice tests without looking over the questions that were answered incorrectly and without writing the mistakes down in a special notebook.
  • Carrying out rough mathematical calculations without any organisation—by writing out your scratch work in a messy manner—results in sign errors and causes you to misread the numbers when taking timed tests.
  • Failing to correctly remember letter formats: employing letter formats that are out of date and therefore do not conform to the requirements of the descriptive scoring rubric, which results in a loss of marks.
  • Relying too much on shortcuts without understanding the fundamentals results in mistakes when the questions are only slightly altered because one has not properly grasped the basic concepts.
  • Failing to focus on English reading comprehension by concentrating solely on grammar rules and never carrying out any daily reading of editorials.
  • Not keeping track of the time taken per question: answering the questions at home without keeping an eye on whether you are maintaining a steady speed of 45 to 60 seconds per question.
  • Focusing too much on one method when solving puzzles: failing to consider alternative possibilities when handling arrangements that involve multiple variables.
  • Because of the difficult first section feeling panicky, you may lose focus during the other parts of the Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning sections.

Why You Should Attempt the SBI PO Mock Test 2027

  • When choosing questions, develop a disciplined method by deciding which ones you should solve right away and which complex puzzles you should skip on your first go-through.
  • Way to increase your keyboard typing speed is to develop the speed and structural discipline required to complete the 50-mark descriptive exam in 30 minutes.
  • Keep track accurately of your weak points by using diagnostic heatmaps to find the topics on which you always lose marks, so that you can direct your study time towards those areas.

Final Merit Normalisation: The 75:25 Score Formula

You won't be chosen as an SBI Probationary Officer simply on the basis of your raw marks.

The bank uses a two-stage scaling formula:

In the second phase the score obtained by you in the Mains (out of 250 marks: 200 for the objective questions and 50 for the descriptive questions) is converted into a score out of 75.

Scaled Mains Score = (Candidate's Score in Phase-II / 250) × 75

The Phase-III normalisation (adjusted to a scale of 25 marks) means that the total score you obtained in both the Group Exercise and the Interview (out of 50 marks: 20 for the Group Exercise and 30 for the Interview) is converted into an score out of 25.

Scaled Phase-III Score = (Candidate's Score in Phase-III / 50) × 25

To obtain your final score out of 100, the two scaled scores are added together.

Final Aggregate Score = Scaled Mains Score + Scaled Phase-III Score

The candidates are arranged in order of their total score, from the highest to the lowest, within each category. When it comes to the calculation of merit, the marks obtained in the Preliminary exam are not taken into account; the only function of these marks is to qualify you for the Mains examination.

It is important to keep a special revision notebook. Whenever you have taken a practice test, you should write down all the questions that you answered incorrectly, determine the calculation or logical error that caused the mistake, and then go through your notes before beginning the next test. It is only through consistent review and disciplined pacing that you can secure a position on the final merit list.
